7 Ups & 2 Downs From Last Night's WWE NXT UK (Oct 24)
1. Nuclear Heat
An imperfect conclusion couldn't sour what was an outstanding NXT UK introduction to Liverpudlian uber-heel Zack Gibson, who cut a typically masterful promo on Cambridge, drawing incendiary heat from a room full of people who already hated his guts, and had the time of their lives trying to boo him out of the building.
Gibson and his "Liverpool's number one" shtick are money. He starts every rant in almost the exact same way, yet never fails to get the desired response. Here, Zack literally had to shout in order to be heard over the crowd and their constant jeers, boos, and chants of "shoes off, if you hate Gibson." He was red-faced and hoarse by the end, and every shot aimed at Pete Dunne and Noam Dar landed perfectly before the Scot's arrival put an end to the hate-filled theatre.
It helps that the awesome Cambridge crowd were so noisy throughout the entire set of tapings, but this was one of the year's most effective WWE promos. Gibson is the king. Build him up with a few solid in-ring performances, more detestable promos, and perhaps the odd character vignette, and WWE will have a wrestler worthy of succeeding Dunne as the brand's top guy.
