7 Ups & 2 Downs From WWE Raw (1 April - Results & Review)

3. Gunther Is Scared

That statement might sound sacrilegious, but Gunther’s actions Monday night bore that out.

After Chad Gable fired up Sami Zayn in preparation for his Intercontinental Championship match at WrestleMania 40, Zayn had a rematch Monday night against Bronson Reed, who defeated a doubting Sami last week.

The back-and-forth bout was fine, but as it was leading to Sami quite possibly winning, Gunther dragged Gable’s carcass out onto the entrance ramp, causing Zayn to leave the ring and tend to his friend. That’s when Gunther struck, beating Sami mercilessly and leaving him laying… sort of.

Zayn managed to pull himself back up – to the fans’ delight – only for the Ring General to put him down for good with a belt shot.

That is quite possibly the first time in a while Gunther has gone to those lengths to attack a future opponent on the eve of their title match. Why would a dominant, almost unbeatable champion resort to such tactics? Because he realizes that a hungry Sami won’t stay down – as he proved on Raw by getting back up – and will keep coming at Gunther until he captures the title.

Gunther is scared that a fired-up Sami Zayn could actually defeat him, and that was enough to spark him to action.
