7 Ups & 3 Downs From AEW Revolution 2024 (Results & Review)

2. Women's Title Match Underwhelms

Toni Storm Deonna Purrazzo Revolution
AEW

In a real shame, Timeless Toni Storm Vs. Deonna Purrazzo simply wasn't very good.

The fans had only just been grabbed by the scruff of the neck and shaken from their adrenaline come-down by a blood-splattered tag team war. This stood no chance of re-re-energising the Greensboro crowd. Standards on pay-per-view are too high, and this was a sub-TV-level effort. Fans enjoy laughing along with Toni Storm in segments; in matches, she struggles under the guise.

The story saw Toni attempt to counter Deonna's superior mat skills. Toni tried to beat Deonna at her own game. This was ostensibly a good, pro wrestling story, but even her old-timey grappling style feels like an affectation, another gimmick, and not a gripping, believable struggle. The match was better when Deonna held control, but even then, it was merely solid and felt lacking in contrast to the far better Danielson Vs. Kingston effort.

The finish, too, was not good. It was a cop-out; Deonna scored a visual tap but Luther distracted the referee. Amid that melee, Mariah May interfered on Toni's behalf. One Storm Zero later, and it was done.

Most everything about this - the main character, the quality of the action, the insulting finish - was pure AEW's women's division on TV fare.
