2. World Champ Has Backup
Heading into Monday’s main event, there was reason to expect good things. Jey Uso and Bron Breakker have surprising chemistry together, and with Saturday Night’s Main Event on the horizon, it was safe to assume that chaos would ensue.
Paul Heyman and Seth Rollins set the expectation in backstage conversations that Bron would not be looking to win the match but rather would be looking to hurt Jey, so their match didn’t carry a ton of drama to it. The bout itself was good enough, drawing a strong reaction from the crowd, but the real story came when Rollins attacked for the disqualification.
Seth and Bron double-teamed Uso until Sami Zayn came down for the save, followed closely by CM Punk, who brought along an Austin-like pop. The four brawled around the ringside area, into the crowd and up an exit ramp, a wild fight that previewed Saturday’s tag match.
That left Jey in the ring alone to turn around right into a Logan Paul knockout punch, the fourth time the social media star laid out Uso. The trope has become played out, but since it’s ending on Saturday, it can be forgiven.
While not a seismic week for the two sides, this served as a good in-action reminder of everyone’s roles, with Sami and Punk continuing to provide backup for the World Heavyweight Champion. Good match, hot brawl to close the show. Not every week is going to include a major development in the saga, and this worked just fine.
