7 Ups & 4 Downs From AEW Dynamite: St. Patrick's Day Slam (Mar 17)
1. Captain Charisma?
Christian Cage is an excellent, excellent talker and unquestionably one of the most engaging personalities of his era, so it was disappointing to see him cutting such a flat, bland promo on last night's Dynamite.
This was straightforward and largely devoid of character. Putting himself over as a workhorse, Cage said he intended to eventually take Kenny Omega's spot but appreciated that he'd have to beat a few guys before he gets there, despite The Best Bout Machine stealing his television time last week. He's here to cement his legacy and, like the t-shirt says, out work everyone.
Devoid of the charm and panache that made Christian's peak periods so special, this didn't hit the mark. At the moment, it feels like a grey boots-and-tights character in a company that thrives because of its freedom of expression, and it feels ill-fitting on this colourful roster, rather than standing as a nice contrast.
Captain Charisma didn't come out to play last night.
