7 Ups & 4 Downs From Impact Wrestling (Mar 24)
3. Four Of The Best
Tessa Blanchard and Eddie Edwards vs. Taya Valkyrie and Michael Elgin was a testament to show how amazing Impact's main event scene is. With Rebellion now unfortunately no longer happening due to the ongoing situation in the world, this was just the match we needed to fill that void, with three out of the four involved being the main event of that pay-per-view in a World Championship outing.
Seeing as the match was fought under proper intergender rules, meaning anyone could fight anyone as just men vs. men and women vs. women, it allowed for some excellent interactions between Blanchard and the much, much larger 'Big Mike', including a gorgeous reverse Frankensteiner from the champ. What didn't make sense, however, was Eddie's constant refusal to perform any move on Taya. Yes, he's the valiant babyface, but his character for the most part is that of a crazed, kendo stick-wielding lunatic - he should've had nothing holding him back.
That minor drawback aside, it was a truly sensational encounter, ending when Elgin and Valkyrie obliterated Edwards with a stiff multi-strike combo, and an Elgin Bomb to finish him off. This was the right result. Tessa and Eddie didn't need the win as they looked exceptionally strong throughout the whole match. Sure, a victory would've solidified that fact, but their opponents were more needing of that win.
Another minor drawback, but perhaps Taya should've got the pin here - we've seen Elgin vs. Edwards in abundance over the last few weeks, and while it's been phenomenal to watch, it's probably time to give that a rest for now.
