1. Pulling Heartstrings, Then Pulling The Rug Out

Watching Cody Rhodes and Paul Heyman do a mutual admiration society promo was a master class in how to have the entire crowd in the palm of your hands… which made it all the more incredible when Heyman yanked the rug out from under their collective feet.

Rhodes addressed the elephant in the room – Sami Zayn’s impending title shot at Elimination Chamber – and wished him luck. But before fans could get into dueling Cody/Sami chants, Heyman came out to congratulate Rhodes, kicking off a promo that got very personal between the two, using Dusty Rhodes as the vehicle.

The two traded heartwarming stories about Dusty, with Paul choking up and almost crying at one point. That made it even better when he hit the climax: During Heyman’s last conversation with Dusty, he told him that Cody was his favorite son, but Roman Reigns was the son he always wanted.

That jerked the fans back to reality, and it sent Cody into overdrive as he pointed out to Heyman that he was just trying to win a wrestling title while everyone wants to make it personal… and how Paul had done that. Now, the feud has become personal without soiling Dusty’s memory or making either man look less.

Master. Class.
