Seth Rollins Gunther Damian Priest
WWE

World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest facing the inaugural champ Seth Rollins should feel like an important match for multiple reasons, but Monday’s in-ring promo was about as dry and dull as possible, and their upcoming battle feels like an obligation than a potential main event.

Priest cut a really boring promo where he tried to praise Rollins and also allude to his time passing by, which drew the Visionary out to call him on his false bravado, and then he pointed out that Damian only won his two world title defenses with outside help, undercutting the impact of his reign – especially if WWE is positioning him as a tweener or future babyface.

Even the “side bet” between the two – if Priest wins, Rollins can’t challenge him for the title again, and if Seth wins, Damian must leave Judgment Day – felt tacked on and forced, an artificial way of trying to build interest in a title match. Priest also seemed awfully eager to declare that he doesn’t really need the group – moments after it was pointed out that he only has the title because of them, and he’s spent the past several weeks trying to pull Judgment Day back together.

The only thing that marginally saved this segment was Gunther strolling out to remind the two of them that he’s waiting for one of them at SummerSlam, all but telling fans that it’s acceptable to look past the Money in the Bank title match and anticipate the next PLE title defense.
