7 Ups And 3 Downs From WWE WrestleMania 39 Night 1
6. Showcase Tag Match Is All Highlights
Calling the four-team tag match a “WrestleMania showcase” was probably a good idea when you consider what went down Saturday night.
The match didn’t have psychology, or an intricate story woven throughout. But that’s more than fine. What we got instead was mayhem, with things breaking down just minutes into the match and devolving to a series of highlights; Chad Gable hitting a Chaos Theory suplex on Braun Strowman, the big men all missing top rope moves, Braun splashing Otis, Otis hitting a World’s Strongest Slam on Strowman, Angelo Dawkins trucking Braun to derail the Strowman Express, and Ricochet nailing a shooting star press to the floor.
Fans were out of their seats screaming for much of this, including the finish that saw Ricochet’s second shooting star press land on Dawkins’ knees and Montez Ford nailing a frog splash for the win.
The second match on the card often is viewed as a cooldown or a death slot, but this match tossed that conventional wisdom out the window.
