6. Mixing Facts To Make Stats

WWE loves its statistics, especially when they can contrive them to fit a narrative. But don’t let simple facts get in the way of laying them out.

Currently, the company loves to drop the nugget that Brock Lesnar is now the longest-reigning champion of the past 30 years, eclipsing the former record of he-who-shall-not-be-named, CM Punk. The only problem? Punk held the WWE Championship (the one AJ Styles holds), while Lesnar is the WWE Universal Champion, holding a title that has only existed for two years.

Now, if WWE wants to say that Lesnar has held a world-level champion for the longest in the past 30 years, that’s accurate. But Michael Cole decided to tell us that Lesnar has “held the championship longer than anyone in the last 30 years.”

It’s not a hard thing to get right. Wrestling might not be a “real” sport in a sense, but if you’re going to try to cite stats to legitimize things, then take 30 seconds to do it right.
