As a general rule, old-timers coming back and hanging with guys who are in their prime is an iffy proposition, as it makes the conditioned, active wrestler look inferior to be bested or put on an even level with a doughy, sedentary opponent.

But Jeff Jarrett (and Road Dogg) starting a rivalry with a just-turned Elias seems to be a perfect match. Jarrett returned at the Royal Rumble at #2, getting attacked by #1, Elias. Last week, things escalated with the Drifter hitting a guitar shot on both Jarrett and Road Dogg.

Monday, we got Double J’s first Raw match in nearly 20 years, with Elias winning a modestly competitive match, but receiving a guitar shot of his own due to Road Dogg distracting him. It doesn’t really hurt Elias, and we got some nice verbal sparring beforehand, with Elias telling them that their song “With My Baby Tonight” and the duo themselves hadn’t aged well.

Elias needed a good foil to relaunch his heel persona, and a rival troubadour is as good as anyone.
