7 Ways TNA Resembles A Dying WCW

2. Failure To Create Their Own Stars And Pushing The Wrong Ones

Sam Shaw Tna When Vince Russo took over WCW, he tried to aggressively promote newer, younger talent. It was a great idea, as many of the company's biggest names were well past their prime. The problem was, though, he didn't have a good eye for talent. When he was in the WWF, Vince McMahon was in charge and let him know who his top guys were. In WCW it was all up to him, and he aggressively pushed unknown names like The Natural Born Thrillers (Mark Jindrak, Sean O'Haire, Reno, Chuck Palumbo, Reno, Johnny the Bull and Mike Sanders) and a host of others far before they were ready. TNA is having the same problem. With many of the top stars being let go, The Bro Mans, Samuel Shaw, and Ethan Carter are among the wrestlers receiving the most television time. Now Robbie E and Zema Ion do have some talent, but they have no upward mobility stuck in their current gimmicks. It's a fun mid-card act, but not more deserving than others on the roster. Daniels and Kazarian, who are far more talented, have basically been reduced to jobbers and their contracts are set to expire soon. Other guys who had a bit of potential like Matt Morgan and D.O.C. were just let go. If Morgan had Ethan Carter's push, the company would probably be in a better spot, but someone in management is not a good judge of talent. During the past few years, WCW was flooded with newer mid-card guys like Kwee Wee, The Maestro, The Jung Dragons and Kid Romeo who lacked any sort of character development. They were clear replacements for many of the big names that left, but we weren't given a reason to care about them. It felt like the company was bringing in people just for the sake of saving money, just like the influx of new arrivals in TNA like Sanada, Tigre Uno, The Alpha Female and Brittany. Hopefully the company gives us a reason to get behind those characters, but so far they're not off to a good start.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
