7 Ways WWE Can Book Free Agent John Cena

2. Roman Reigns At SummerSlam

As announced by WWE last night, Roman Reigns will make his SummerSlam plans known on next week’s show. On the very same evening, John Cena’s return vignette presented him as a “free agent,” and not a SmackDown-specific superstar. Are the two related? There’s a strong chance, as it doesn’t look like WWE have any other plans for Roman at their big summer pay-per-view.

Putting two and two together, we could be headed towards Reigns vs. Cena in Brooklyn. It’ll pit the most hated babyface in professional wrestling against the man who held that mantle up until a couple of years ago, and while the crowd reactions will likely be all over the place, it should at least be a good match. Despite the level of criticism they inspire, both men are excellent big match performers, and there’s little reason to believe they won’t succeed.

Cena’s proposed feud with Jinder Mahal could be a stumbling block, but facing Reigns would be a far more marketable bout. Roman is set to meet Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 32, and Cena would be exactly the kind of victory he needs to propel himself back into the Universal Title picture. Many would sneer at the booking, but it isn’t nonsensical.
