7 Worst Wrestling Moments Of The Week (July 9)
5. In Defense Of Dean
This week Miz TV seemed to exist to tear down Jonathan Good the human being and not Dean Ambrose the character. It's one of those things WWE does where they want to send a message to a wrestler in real life, but in the narrative, it means nothing and doesn't ring true. Saying how people believed Dean would be the next Roddy Piper, and how he caves under pressure when the spotlight is put on him is digging at the man from a shoot perspective and not from a worked one. So for people who don't read up on the backstage ongoing, it's all meaningless.
For starters, the Ambrose character could have pointed out Piper never won a World Title.
Now looking at the story, Ambrose cashed in Money in the Bank, then defeated both Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns at Battleground 2016, then he beat Dolph Ziggler in the SmackDown title match at SummerSlam. He even pinned John Cena cleanly on TV! The only reason he lost his title is because A.J. Styles gave him a low blow and James Ellsworth cost him his chance in the rematch. That is the actual story they've spent time telling. Someone on the commentary team should be relaying that info to counter Miz, but then, real life Good wouldn't get the message.
Yes, the Ambrose character is as corny as they come. Yes, he hasn't lived up to actual expectations. Yes, his dive through the ropes wouldn't hurt anyone in your grandma's quilting club. But he's not writing his own character. He's basically doing what he's told, and what he's told to do no one could make work.
