7 Worst Wrestling Moments Of The Week (May 28)
4. The SmackDown Opening
Who scripted A.J. Styles to refer to Kevin Owens as Eric Cartman? And why? Did Owens once force Sami Zayn to eat his own parents or something? WWE's continued pop culture reference promos continue to be the worst.
For long-time fans, you may have picked up on some of the lazy ways the company books their shows. Unfortunately, some of those ways are damaging to the characters.
SmackDown featured another one of those segments where each wrestler comes out one-by-one, says something, then stands there for 10 minutes and politely lets everyone else talk and run them down. They did this exact same thing a couple of weeks ago on Raw. Kurt Angle came to the ring and announced everyone who was going to be in the No. 1 contenders match at Extreme Rules. Somehow he got Finn Balor’s name right that time.
Also, Shane McMahon once again showed he’s not qualified to run the show because he didn’t originally involve Kevin Owens in the match...and instead booked the guy who lost the night before. This was also the same guy that smashed his head through a car window.
In addition to Nakamura's underwhelming match, having him appear in this made him feel just like everybody else. Maybe a wrestling show should open with a wrestling match every now and then. I know that's a running joke, but in 21 episodes of SmackDown this year, they haven't attempted that approach once.
