American Alpha were expected to dominate the doubles division on SmackDown upon being drafted from NXT, especially after they were crowned champions in December.

Taking the straps off Randy Orton and Luke Harper was a big rub for Chad Gable and Jason Jordan, but it soon became clear that the title change was only designed to precipitate the Wyatt Family split, rather than create a platform for the decorated collegiate wrestlers.

It was through no fault of their own that American Alpha’s reign failed to meet expectations. The SmackDown Tag Team Champions were rarely on television in the months after their triumph, and were reduced to a series of lazy multi-team matches upon their return.

They quietly dropped the titles to The Usos before WrestleMania, and had almost been written off as a team by the time they lost to The Shining Stars on SmackDown in April, which was a pity - because it would have been awesome to watch them tackle Jimmy and Jey, as well as The New Day, throughout a special summer of tag action on the Blue Brand.
