7 Wrestlers WWE Punished For Getting Over

6. Damien Sandow

Damien Sandow was forced to fight the shovel for years during his second WWE spell, the company seemingly doggedly determined to bury him like a proverbial bone.

By the end, it was simply bone-headed. Sandow had managed to ride out being the necessary concept-saving Money in the Bank sacrifice, not to mention being repositioned as comedy fodder for the likes of an even-then superannuated DX and the actual Hugh Jackman. But surely being asked to imitate The Miz in a series of asinine skits would at last be the final nail in the coffin?

Sandow embraced a gimmick tailor-made to fail, and soon began receiving reactions far outstripping the level of his push. Come WrestleMania 31's Andre Battle Royal, all anybody wanted to see was the rechristened 'Mizdow' eliminate his overbearing employer and claim the trophy.

He did the first bit - to one of the biggest ovations of the night. But seconds later, he was dismally dumped by, of course, Big Show. The obvious and inviting programme never came to fruition, and Sandow became an afterthought. In this scenario, the superstar's popularity was in excess of his potential - but there was still no real excuse for the colossal waste of such a gimme.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
