Throughout the '90s, thousands of magazines were sold on the strength of 'What If?' articles looking at dream match scenarios between WWF and WCW stars. It was a perpetual topic of great interest amongst the fanbase, and those showdowns people had wept over the mere thought of suddenly became a reality when Vince McMahon purchased WCW.

A few months later, fans were crying tears of disappointment, not joy.

Invasion was supposed to be a true WWF vs. WCW multi-man war. That's how it was billed, except ECW had been shoehorned into the process because McMahon didn't have access to top WCW names like Sting, Hogan, Nash or Goldberg. So, Booker T and DDP teamed with The Dudley Boyz and Rhyno.

No offence intended gents, but at least three of those names didn't belong. Things got worse when the WWF realised that 'Team Alliance' lacked star power and turned WWF stalwart Steve Austin rogue so he could become the invader-in-chief. It was all so, so underwhelming to watch for anyone who lived through the 'Monday Night War'.
