AJ Lee as a character has been defined by her relationships and the men she surrounded herself with. First there was Daniel Bryan, her first love who treated her terribly and blamed her for his shortcomings. Then there was Kane and CM Punk, for whom she changed fundamental aspects of her personality in order to please. After that was John Cena, the ultimate good guy who cared more about WWE than he cared about her, and then Dolph Ziggler who seemed contractually obligated to break up with her once he turned face. After Ziggler, WWE toyed with doing something very interesting with AJs character, she started hanging with Layla, but the way the two acted was much more like lovers than it was BFFs. They skipped around together holding hands, making gooey eyes at each other and it seemed like WWE were on the verge of doing something really progressive. Unfortunately, the pairing was quickly folded into AJs feud with the Total Divas and it became about who was and who wasnt on that show. It may have been for the best, because WWE has been notoriously behind-the-times with the way it portrays anything that could be considered "queer" so introducing a confident bisexual character may have been far too much for them to handle. Had the pulled it off however, it would have been an incredibly forward-thinking story, and featured one of the most under-represented groups in entertainment.
