7 WWE Fake Accents That Are Miserably Poor
3. Kofi Kingston
When Kofi Kingston debuted on WWE’s ECW brand in January 2008, he was billed as the first ever Jamaican Superstar to wrestle for WWE. To drive the point home, they dressed him in the colours of the Jamaican flag, named him after the capital city of the country, gave his finishing maneuver the name “Trouble In Paradise”, and had him speak in a thick, heavy-handed Jamaican(ish). It wasn’t so much a proper accent as it was that of someone who just came back from vacation and ‘just picked it up’.
Mercifully, the accent came to an end during the lead-up to 2009’s Survivor Series when Kofi simply just spoke in the middle of the ring without it as though nothing had changed. Triple H, in line with his goofy 2009 DX persona, pointed it out right there in the ring, getting a laugh from everyone and a sputtering gasp from kayfabe.
It’s for the best that it ended after only two years. Kofi was, by his own admission later, surprised to learn just how often he would have to use the voice in his real life. He was happy to let go. Ultimately, it was a miracle that the accent wasn’t worse. Kingston told Chris Jericho on his podcast that not only had he never actually been to Jamaica at the time, but that the only accent he studied belonged to musician, Damian Marley.
