Hardcore Holly was always a well-rounded wrestler who could do pretty much anything. He could work the power game, he could fly (when necessary), he could do mat work. You name it., Holly could do it.

Despite this versatility, Holly was mainly used as an enhancement talent in WWE, which is a fancy way of saying that he had to either lose to up-and-coming and established stars, or he had to test the rookies to see if they had what it takes to be a WWE Superstar.

A big part of that latter responsibility included working stiff and chopping his opponents with incredible force. In his autobiography, Holly mentioned that many people in WWE, including the notorious Kevin Dunn, enjoyed watching and listening to Holly continuously chop other wrestlers.

He excelled at the backhand chop, and at one point was considered the best at it in the entire WWE. Chris Benoit, another skilled master of the knife-edge chop, once said that Holly chopped him harder than Antonio Inoki, and Holly thought that the reason Benoit didn’t chop him when they wrestled was because he didn’t fancy getting a receipt.

Whether it was at house shows or on WWE programming, Holly’s chops were among the stiffest and most entertaining. He was so stiff on purpose, because taking a knife-edge chop is the perfect way of gauging how much pain a prospective WWE superstar can take.
