Alberto Del Rio's first run in WWE was a textbook example of stop-start booking. First, he won the 40-man Royal Rumble (which until 2018 was objectively the greatest Royal Rumble. The numbers don't lie, Senior Joe). While he was pegged to win the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, plans were changed, and he did the honors to Edge in what turned out to be the latter's final match.

After moving to RAW, Del Rio was given another golden opportunity to catapult into the main event when he won the RAW MiTB briefcase in July. The following month, he cashed in on CM Punk to close SummerSlam 2011, and Del Rio was off to the races... until he dropped the title a month later to John Cena at Night of Champions.

More bafflingly, Del Rio became champion a mere two weeks later at Hell in a Cell, when he won back the WWE title in a triple threat with Punk and Cena. Then, Del Rio finally dropped the strap at Survivor Series to Punk, who proceeded to have his record-setting reign.

People talk all the time about how badly the Summer of Punk was botched, but few discuss how, with all this hot-shotting, it was Del Rio who was really thrown to the perros.
