In 2009, CM Punk used his second MiTB briefcase to cash in on Jeff Hardy, igniting a world title run and heel turn that would make Punk a legitimate main-eventer, which would more-or-less remain constant for him until his departure in early 2014.

In 2008, however, CM Punk was a midcard babyface on ECW who was given his first briefcase simply out of a backup plan. Originally, Jeff Hardy was slated to win MiTB at WrestleMania XXIV, but a suspension put that plan on hold. Instead, Punk got the honor. Moving to RAW, he did little of note before finally cashing in on Edge in June, winning his first ever world title. Unfortunately, RAW also had John Cena, Batista, Shawn Michaels, and Chris Jericho, so there was no way Punk had a chance of getting a proper spotlight as champion. Instead, he continued to be a midcarder, but now he had a shiny gold belt. Plus, he only got one successful title defense on PPV, beating JBL in the middle of the card.

Afterward, he didn't even properly lose his title, as he was stripped of it after a storyline injury. Obviously, Punk would recover from this mistreatment, but yeesh.
