8 Brutally Short WWE Title Reigns That Don't Sit Well With Fans
4. Rey Mysterio's WWE Championship Reign - 2 Hours
At Money in the Bank 2011, CM Punk walked out of WWE with the main prize firmly around his waist, and the company was in need of a new champion. Following a tournament to crown a new title holder, Rey Mysterio came out on top to hold the WWE Championship for the first time in his career. The crowd was happy, the wrestlers backstage were celebrating with Rey, but the night wasn't over for the new champion.
John Cena was granted a match that night for the title and won, ending Mysterio's only reign as WWE Champion, and his last run as World Champion in the company.
There are a few reasons this doesn't sit well with fans today. The first issue is that Mysterio never had a meaningful run as World Champion, as his reigns were short, and he was dominated in almost every match he had. Secondly, with Cena as WWE champion, it felt like everything CM Punk was fighting for was all for nothing. Throughout the whole scenario, WWE was trying to maintain the status quo, and that meant Cena had to be the top dog.
