8 Former Midcarders Who Could Returns As WWE Main Eventers In 2016

1. Drew McIntyre

If you look under 'missed opportunity' in the dictionary, you'll see a picture of a Drew McIntyre. After a couple of years in WWE developmental, the Scotsman debuted on the August 28th, 2009 episode of Smackdown, defeating R-Truth. About a month later, after weeks of so-so outings, Vince McMahon himself introduced McIntyre as a 'future WWE Champion'. No pressure, huh? 'The Chosen One' went on a winning streak, which was quashed on the March 18th, 2010 Smackdown when the Intercontinental Champion was decisively beaten by The Undertaker. He never really recovered and certainly didn't come close to reaching the coveted WWE Title in the years that followed. For McIntyre it was midcard feud after midcard feud (if he was even featured at all) until WWE creative decided to pair him with Heath Slater and Jinder Mahal in the comedy stable Three Man Band. After almost two years of being a glorified jobber, WWE released McIntyre from his contract on Jun 12th, 2014. So what has he been up to in the year and a half since? Well, he's been doing pretty damn well for himself, wrestling all over the world in TNA, PWG and Scotland's burgeoning ICW (where McIntyre was their Champion). He's been having great matches and really doing a lot to erase the memories of his disappointing WWE run. Stil, McIntyre is only 30-years-old, is in great shape and has shown a lot on the indie scene lately, so there's every chance that WWE could give him another chance in the near future. Perhaps then McMahon's proclamation that Drew is a future WWE Champion may actually yet come true.
