Vince McMahon always has “his” guy. Hulk Hogan, to Bret Hart, to Steve Austin, to The Rock, to John Cena. Roman Reigns was the next. He was chosen and protected at all costs. As CM Punk revealed in his podcast with Colt Cabana, he was told to make Roman look good every time out. He was destined to run the wrestling world.

Destiny can be a funny thing, though. As determined as Vince can be, if fans don’t want someone as their guy, it’s not going to happen. See Lex Luger and Diesel for examples. For some reason, the boss has been extra stubborn this time around, and has refused to give up on his most recent pet project.

What helped Cena secure the top slot and hold onto it for so long as that he’s reliable, and kept himself out of trouble. He has never been suspended. Ideally his successor could also claim the same. Not so anymore with Reigns.
