8 Matches That Should Have Headlined WrestleMania (If WWE Had Listened To The Fans)

3. CM Punk Vs. The Rock - WrestleMania 29

When Once in a Lifetime became Twice in a Lifetime, a large portion of the WWE Universe let out an audible groan. Why were John Cena and The Rock having a re-match? These groans grew even louder when it became clear that the WWE Championship was going to be its prize.

This meant that The Rock became the man who ended CM Punk's 434-day reign as champion, an anti-climatic end to a truly landmark title reign. Less than a year later Punk walked away from the company, with one of this major grievances being the WrestleMania-obsession with nostalgia acts and his own inability to secure a headlining spot at the Show of Shows.

If the WWE Universe had been listened to in 2013, then the landscape today could have been so very different. If The Rock was to be in the main event then fans wanted CM Punk to be involved in some form or another, and those same fans would have had a much easier time accepting The Rock as champion if the title change came in the main event of WrestleMania.

Even a three-way featuring Punk, Rocky and Cena could have sated the desires of the audience. Instead we got a Once in a Lifetime sequel and 'redemption' for a John Cena character that arguably has never needed to know the meaning of the word.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
