4. CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar - Summerslam 2013
WWE.comIn many people and publication's eyes 2013's Match of the Year, Punk vs Lesnar is an obvious addition to this list. Psychology, excellent crowd heat, unique bumps and the odd spot that was worked stiff, this match had literally everything and highlighted both Punk and Lesnar to their absolute strengths- Lesnar being the dominant beast and Punk the scrappy underdog who never gives in. Sometimes a lot of the art of pro-wrestling goes unnoticed by the fans. It's never enough to have just a technically good match. William Regal had tonnes of them in his career and never drew a dime. It's about getting the balance right between theatrics, personality and technicality in the ring, combining smooth moves with gestures and taunts and an ability to sell the story of the bout in it's strongest way. Get it right and you get a CM Punk or a Kurt Angle. Get it wrong and you get a Dean Malenko or Lance Storm- great wrestlers yes but their name on a marquee would mean empty seats. When you get two athletes who've got the mixture right that connect instantly in the ring to tell a great story, it's pro-wrestling magic and a worthy watch for any cynical naysayer. There's no better example of that chemistry than Punk vs Lesnar from Summerslam last year.
