8 Reasons To Check Out See No Evil 2 This Halloween

6. The Setting

Jen and Sylvia Soska do a tremendous job of establishing a mood for the film based on the environment they have created. The lighting is a mixture of dim, dark browns and greens that were prevalent in the Saw series and brighter blues and the contrast really helps to create an uneasiness that is only heightened when one remembers that there is a killer stalking in the shadows. The lighting is also an effective tool in accenting Jacob as it reflects of off the new burn victim mask he sports and really gives him an even more terrifying. That the facility, the morgue, is so enormous only adds to what the twins are able to do. From the embalming rooms to the long corridors and even the restrooms, the directors use every inch available to them and they do so with great effect. The restroom scene, where Goodnight dispatches of one of his victims, is particularly effective. The scene plays on the fear of claustrophobia in that there it is such a confined space. There is nowhere for the poor, defenseless young person to go. There is no escape and though you do not see him until it is too late, you know he is there. It's such an effective scene that was made all the better by the atmosphere created by the directors. The morgue itself is a character in the film, an accomplice of sorts for the killer. It keeps his prey contained in one spot, with little option but to continue moving or die. How Goodnight knows his way around the facility when he had, at least according to the original, been holed up in his family's dilapidated hotel for his entire life, is a bit of a mystery but if one can put that small detail aside, they can full appreciate the role the building plays in the film.
