While the opportunity to work with his friends could play a decisive role in Cole’s decision, so will the prospect of linking up with his favourite opponent. ‘The Panama City Playboy’ has previously named AJ Styles as the best wrestler he has competed against, and cites their May 2015 singles match as a particular favourite.

Having spent five months on the treatment table after suffering a major shoulder injury, Styles was Cole’s first opponent back. He found the prospect of facing such a celebrated wrestler daunting, particularly after spending so long on the sidelines, but has praised the former WWE Champion for putting him totally at ease. They went on to have an outstanding bout filled with dramatic near-falls, with Styles picking up the victory.

That wasn’t the only time Adam and AJ have faced each other, however. The duo’s first singles bout came in September 2014, when Styles scored the win in a largely mat-based affair, with AJ also pinning Cole as part of a multi-man ROH Championship contendership bout in late 2015. It’ll likely be a while before they have a chance to renew their in-ring rivalry, but here’s hoping they do, because the results were always outstanding.
