8 Things You Learn Re-Watching The First WWE Elimination Chamber Match

7. The Match Was Created By Eric Bischoff

It is unlikely to be mentioned in the hyper-dramatic video package that precedes the 2018 Elimination Chamber matches, but the concept was the creation (in storyline) of none other than Eric Bischoff. Easy E was actually the first man to enter Satan’s Prison, cutting a somewhat rambling promo inside the structure, explaining the rules as he went.

It didn’t really seem so at the time, but the turnaround from WCW going out of business to Eric Bischoff being embraced on WWE TV was incredibly short: Just two years passed between ATM Eric’s final televised appearance on WCW and his arrival as RAW General Manager. To put that in context, CM Punk’s last appearance was twice as long ago - and he never tried to put Vince McMahon out of business.

The Elimination Chamber was presented as the brainchild of an evil genius, the dastardly concoction of a sadistic individual. It is easy to draw parallels between some of Bischoff’s WWE work and Dario Cueto in Lucha Underground, at least in these early days, although Eric soon became little more than a lackey for the heels.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
