8 Times Fighters Won When They Should Have Been DQ'd
1. Rousimar Palhares Refuses To Let Go Of A Submission After The Fight Is Over
Much like the aforementioned Yoel Romero, Rousimar Palhares has made a habit of bizarre antics inside the cage.
Rising up the UFC ranks as an almost impossibly strong grappler with a penchant for leg attacks, Palhares wasted no time in becoming one of the most feared fighters on the roster.
In a fight with Nate Marquardt, Palhares was KO'd after complaining to the referee that Marquardt was greasing, mid-fight! The guy literally tried to have a conversation with the referee while his opponent was actively trying to knock him out.
The strangeness only continued throughout the Brazilian's UFC tenure, leading to his release in 2013 after again failing to let go of a submission after the referee had stopped the fight against Mike Pierce.
Perhaps Palhares' most egregious performance, however, came against Jake Shields in the World Series of Fighting promotion. During the fight, Shields repeatedly attempted to earn positional control against the Brazilian but was repelled after his eyes were gouged on several occasions to the point where he was temporarily blinded.
In the closing sequence of the fight, Palhares secured a kimura and forced Shields to submit but presumably decided he hadn't been villainous enough already and continued cranking the submission well after Shields' tap.
