Before becoming The Undertaker in the WWF, the future 'Deadman' was 'Mean' Mark Callous in WCW. At 1990's Great American Bash pay-per-view, Callous lost a United States Title challenge to Lex Luger, but managed to look impressive in defeat. On commentary, Jim Ross talked up the tall, powerful newcomer.

Behind the scenes, WCW management weren't having any of it. They didn't see what JR could see, and they told him there were zero plans to push Callous or develop his character. When booker Ole Anderson told Ross he didn't see money in the big Texan at all, Ross decided to intervene and give Callous some advice.

He told 'Taker to go to the WWF and see if his skills would be better-appreciated there.

Callous listened and jumped companies to tremendous success. The Undertaker gimmick ended up being the ideal role for him, and Vince McMahon did think he had money written all over him. Though there's a chance 'Taker would've switched at some point anyway, it's safe to assume JR sped up the process by revealing what WCW higher-ups thought (or didn't think) about him.
