Attempting to build-up anticipation for the Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia, WWE decided it would host a World Cup, in which the victor was declared to be ‘The Best in the World,’ despite CM Punk and countless other wrestlers claiming such an accolade. Not many fans expected the company to pay off the tournament with anything meaningful, but the actual outcome at Crown Jewel was even more of a letdown than anticipated.

Somehow, it wasn’t entirely too surprising from the sports entertainment juggernaut at the time.

Beginning a WrestleMania 33 feud with many peaks and valleys, Shane ended up replacing The Miz after he was “injured” and ruled unable to compete. It was egregious enough for him to strong-arm his way into the finals, yet WWE still went a step further by having McMahon win the entire thing.

The best wrestler in the world, according to WWE, was Shane McMahon.

Despite all of the other world-class performers on the roster, it just had to be McMahon. His victory affirmed the concerns of fans willing to tune in to the event, and his incessant bragging did little to help anyone out on his way to WrestleMania or get him the right kind of heat. Although he managed not to fall completely down to the bottom, Miz had little room to grow once McMahon was back out of the picture.
