8 Times The Wrong Wrestler Won The Royal Rumble

2. Mr. McMahon (1999)

The 2015 Royal Rumble must be pleased that the 1999 Royal Rumble exists, because without the final Rumble of the millennium 2015 would be the dirt-worst. The 1999 Royal Rumble made the same mistake the 2016 Rumble only just managed to avoid, in that it was a one-story Rumble with that story starting the whole thing off.

Stone Cold Steve Austin and Mr. McMahon got things going, and the same two ended up being the final two combatants. This was after they fought all over the arena, at the expense of the other 28 performers in the match who were completely forgotten. Looking back, it is amazing to see just how much of then-WWF TV time was taken up by the Austin/McMahon saga.

To make matters worse, Mr. McMahon came out on top. Would he go on to main event WrestleMania? Would he heck. That honour still went to Austin, who clearly should have won this Rumble. You can still tell the same one dimensional story, but Austin winning would have made this Rumble a whole lot less sucky.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
