8 Times WWE Wrestlers Saved Other Wrestlers From Injury

2. AJ Styles Saves James Ellsworth

On an episode of SmackDown, Styles was allowed to choose who he'd like to face in a non-title match. He chose perennial jobber James Ellsworth, thinking it would essentially be a "night off". That was, until SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan made Dean Ambrose (the man he beat for the WWE Championship) the special guest referee.

As Styles tried to finish off Ellsworth with the Styles Clash, Ellsworth instinctively tucked his... well, chin, we suppose.

In training, pro-wrestlers are instructed to tuck their chins when taking bumps so they don't bash their head against the mat. The opposite is true when taking the Styles Clash. Because of the unique execution of the move (straight upside down to face down position), taking it with a tucked chin could result in a broken neck.

So, noticing at the very last second that Ellsworth had tucked his head incorrectly, Styles extended his arms so they would hit the mat before his knees did, thus lightening the impact and saving Ellsworth from a potentially-career-ending spinal injury.

Though Styles would lose the match thanks to Ambrose's shenanigans, his quick thinking during it made him a winner.
