On September 2nd, 2023, CM Punk was "fired with cause" by AEW. After a hellacious final few months in the company that included his infamous All Out press conference in 2022, being suspended for the Brawl Out aftermath, and choking Jack Perry at All In at Wembley Stadium, it was borderline impossible to imagine that WWE would be his next destination.

Punk has a history of run-ins with authority figures, and he and Triple H had a complicated past. Nevertheless, Hunter admitted that WWE should always strive to give fans what they want. CM Punk returned to WWE at the 2023 Survivor Series, but bets were being placed as to how long this unlikely union would actually last.

Since that point, things have gone as well as they possibly could. Punk has been empowered to constructively use his creative vision in unison with WWE's booking team. Hunter and Punk have a better relationship than ever, with mutual respect flowing between them without the involvement of Vince McMahon. This partnership has gone so well that even AJ Lee has returned to WWE. It's a testament to the maturity and love for wrestling that both Triple H and Punk have that the Best In The World is even being groomed to be a major part of WWE creative after his in-ring career is over.
