Shawn Michaels was the original uncool heel. After HBK split from partner Marty Jannetty, he was a pretty despicable heel. He was also vain, narcissistic, flamboyant, and effeminate. Fans didn't want to see a wrestler dress like the village people and dance around like a male stripper. People weren't as tolerant towards homosexuality back then and many viewed Michaels' outfits as an attempt to get cheap heat. And yet despite all this he was over. The Heartbreak Kid was one of the hottest acts in the company during the 90s and fans always went crazy for him. Of course that could be attributed to Michaels' in-ring performances. One of the greatest wrestlers of all time, HBK could have made any character work.
