8 Ups & 2 Downs From Impact Wrestling Victory Road 2020
5. Free For All
A four way World Tag Team Championships bout was added to the Bound For Glory card following Tuesday's Impact episode, and so Victory Road offered a preview of that title contest. That came in the form of Alex Shelley vs. Josh Alexander vs. Ace Austin vs. Karl Anderson, which, unsurprisingly, went down a treat.
A minor Down for it following the rule of having two men in the ring at a time as opposed to all four, but it didn't do anything to hamper the natural flow of the match. Bonus brownie points to Anderson for both tagging himself out and then back in by chopping Ace across the chest - it's the little things. Each of the four brought something different to the match, which is what made it so spectacular. From Shelley's leg work to Austin's nefarious use of the playing card-assisted finger slice, it made for great viewing.
Referee Brandon Tolle took a bump soon thereafter, allowing the four partners at ringside - Chris Sabin, Ethan Page, Madman Fulton, and Doc Gallows - to intervene on behalf of their pals, creating a frenzy that Tolle eventually awoke to, sending the managers packing. Things ended not long after, though, as 'The Walking Weapon' spiked Shelley on his skull with a double underhook piledriver that looked as deadly as it possibly could have. Shelley's selling on that was something else.
The way this story has been built as we approach the pay-per-view has been superb. Up until now, it's sort of been The Motor City Machine Guns and The Good Brothers vs. The North, Ace, and Fulton. This was the first time we've actually seen all four teams go at each other instead of teaming up. In a way, waiting for that moment actually helped develop the story, rather than take anything away.
