8 Ups & 3 Downs From AEW Dynamite (16 Mar)

Thunder Rosa
AEW

Fighting in her hometown on St. Patrick's Day Slam, the very show that hosted the excellent Unsanctioned Lights Out bout this time last year, Thunder Rosa finally became AEW Women's World Champion.

Her steel cage triumph over Britt Baker was the right kind of messy. Blood feuds shouldn't be settled in clean, crisp, and clinical encounters, where everything looks smooth and aesthetically pleasing. These matches should feel real and ugly. You're supposed to invest in the idea that these two people hate each other, and would do anything to topple the other. The occasional sloppy moment added to the aforementioned Lights Out match - and this one too.

Paul Turner's ref bump and the ensuing visual pin of Baker had alarm bells ringing midway through, though those concerns were proven unfounded by the end. Brutal spots like an avalanche Air Raid Crash onto a stack of chairs and Rosa literally biting her way out of Lockjaw played out before the finish: a powerbomb and Fire Thunder driver onto thumbtacks, with Aubrey Edwards counting the three.

Both women bled like crazy, particularly Baker, whose reign ended on 290 days. She had a good reign. Now, it's time for something new.
