8 Ups & 3 Downs From AEW Dynamite (May 27)
4. Spot Monkeys
Dynamite opened with a brief backstage promo in which Matt Hardy reverted to the oldest version of himself, 'Surge,' asking The Young Bucks if they wanted to be spot monkeys for the night.
They most certainly did.
The Bucks and Hardy vs. Private Party and Joey Janela was a pure spotfest. Viewers averse to that style won't have gotten anything out of it, though it was the kind of highlight-filled display that would have ignited a Dynamite audience before the global health crisis kicked in. All big bombs and giffable moments, it was fast, fluid, exciting, and crammed with fun bits like Isiah Kassidy's tongue-in-cheek abdominal stretch and the accidental Superkick to The Blade that would later come back to haunt the Bucks.
We also got some tremendous selling from Marq Quen, who played up a worked knee injury so convincingly he had fans worried he was legitimately hurt after the show. This took him out of the match, giving the Bucks and Hardy the advantage, with the More Bang For Your Buck-induced finish coming soon after.
This was just fun. Sometimes, that's all you need.
