8 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE Raw (10 Mar - Results & Review)
1. The Opposite Of Snug
Jey Uso is less than six weeks away from the biggest match of his career: a World Heavyweight Championship match that could very well main-event one night of WrestleMania 41. For a career tag team wrestler who just began regularly wrestling in singles less than two years ago, it doesn’t get any bigger.
Going up against Gunther, a wrestler notorious for a physical, violent style, Uso needs to be on top of his game, not just in storyline but as a performer. Gunther’s offense looks like it can maim an opponent. His best challenges have been against wrestlers who can match that physicality, with Sheamus and Drew McIntyre immediately jumping to mind.
Unfortunately for Jey, his match against Grayson Waller to open Raw on Monday night was anything but snug. Uso flew around and drew loud “Yeet” chants from fans, but he whiffed on a hip attack and threw a few superkicks that either completely missed the intended targets’ heads or came to a dead stop under their chins.
As a “get fans up cheering and give Jey a win” match, this served its purpose, but as a reminder of the gulf that can exist between Gunther’s best and Jey’s average effort, this sadly also succeeded. On the night, that world title match could be fantastic, but if Jey starts throwing superkicks that miss by a mile and tries a hip attack that isn’t in the same area code as Gunther’s head, it could be a long night.
