1. Gonzalez Retains In Underwhelming Affair

There's no way around the fact that expectations were high coming into Raquel Gonzalez's first NXT Women's Championship defence on the latest edition of the black and gold show. A straight-forward tale of a seasoned veteran wanting to finally reach the pinnacle of the industry, and beat the woman she classes as her carbon copy, was sold even more by a compelling interview between the two on last week's show.

So, that's why it's such a shame that the pair's eventual collision fell a bit flat in the end. Things got off to a convincing enough start, with Mercedes Martines launching herself at the champ and nailing her with a senton to the outside. However, as the match progressed, both stars found themselves falling victim to miscommunication and a few clunky botches, both of which derailed the intensity of the opening minutes pre-commercial break.

Gonzalez would eventually score the expected win on the back of overcoming a series of knees and fisherman-buster suplex from Martinez, slamming her challenger into the mat with her always-devastating Chingona Bomb, but the new champ will likely want to move on from this let down as soon as possible.

It may have at first seemed like a left-field move to have the Cruiseweight Championship match go on last instead of one of the brand's top titles, but the overall feeling of apathy towards the eventual showing likely explains its placement on the night.
