8 Ups And 1 Down From WWE NXT (Oct 7)

5. Maverick And Morty

For parts of this segment, this gimmick was just beginning to wear thin. Not badly, not a lot, and not so much it's a problem, but we'd done the gag now and it felt vitally important that they actually started to go somewhere with it beyond just there now being bad entrance music.

Ever-Rise, god bless them, were probably the perfect opponents at this stage. Lowly enough that the victory should be expected, but also lowly enough that a defeat carried the threat of a full implosion. Killian Dain can put up with a lot, but picking up the L from the brand's biggest losers (statistically, lads, it's nothing personal) would be too much.

In the end, it was another win that Maverick and Dain got almost in spite of themselves, with the latter now taking to just using the former as a weapon. The wrinkle of Dain carrying his partner to the back after he sparked him out means we're heading towards the Begrudging Respect stage of this story. Great stuff.
