After two years out of the business to pursue other opportunities, Jericho plotted his return to the WWE.
Similar to his Y2J debut, vignettes began to air on television teasing a return of someone who would save the WWE. The cryptic binary code clips were like something out of The Matrix and after months of hints, the fans were expecting something special as the payoff.
However, when Jericho returned on Raw to confront Randy Orton and insert himself immediately into the WWE title picture, it all felt a bit underwhelming.
Sporting new shorter hair and a glittery waistcoat, Jericho looked a bit too much like your dad trying to be cool. It just didn't click with the audience as well as Jericho might have hoped, perhaps because it felt too much like a rehash of his Y2J persona.
Despite his cool new finishing move - the Codebreaker - Jericho was floundering as a babyface in this role, eventually being shifted back into the Intercontinental title picture and feuding with JBL because the company couldn't figure out what to do with him.
