While even a layperson can understand just how much potential for damage there is in a professional MMA fight, it's important to note that by the time many fighters have even stepped in a cage for the first time that they have already competed in other combat sports with all the accumulating injuries that they entail.

This was the case for UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman, who had wrestled for over a decade before he made his MMA debut winning the UFC 10 tournament. Coleman's all-action fighting style would see him do great things during his 14-year career, but a buildup of injuries would eventually force The Hammer to retire in 2010.

Coleman's body would continue to deteriorate even after he called time on his sporting career, and in 2017 he underwent a pair of hip replacements with help from a crowdfunding campaign. Thankfully, the surgeries were successful and have allowed him to since regain some of his mobility.
