8 Ways To Ensure A Successful Women's WrestleMania Main Event

7. Location, Location, Location

Another common complaint from the recent HIAC main event was the odd decision to have Charlotte walk out the winner in Sasha Banks’ hometown of Boston. This is much like Tom Brady walking into Gillette Stadium as the defending Super Bowl champ, only to lose in a blowout to the Green Bay Packers whilst receiving a wedgie from Aaron Rodgers (#AmericanSportsReference). WWE has a long tradition of having the hometown hero lose, but those tend to be in forgettable house shows or unimportant TV matches.

Pay-per-view matches usually render that unwritten rule null, with the decision being the result of an ongoing storyline. This can lead to insane reactions in either direction, like the elation of CM Punk’s WWE Title victory at Money in the Bank 2011 in his hometown of Chicago, or the despondency of British Bulldog’s loss of the European Championship at One Night Only 1997 in Birmingham.

While WWE has their WrestleMania venues booked well in advance, the location still must be taken into account when determining the right time or right performers for a women’s main event. You certainly don't want a Lesnar-in-Minneapolis situation in which the crowd ceaselessly chants for the heel, lest we forget that people tend to support wrestlers from their hometowns, regardless of that wrestler's alignment.

With the right build, any babyface victory will result in a raucous ovation, but just imagine the orgasmic joy that would come from a Bayley win in California, or Becky Lynch becoming champ in her home country of Ireland! Lofty, I know, but it gives you guys across the pond something to dream about, right? Regardless, not enough emphasis is placed on the location of a major bout, and in the right city, with the right crowd, and the right winner, a fleeting moment of glory can turn into an immortal memory that lives on in hearts, minds, and video packages for generations.
