6. Great American Bash 1996
WWE.comTwo matches on this show were on my list of the best Great American Bash
matches: Dean Malenko vs. Rey Mysterio and Chris Benoit vs. Kevin Sullivan. The first one is Mysterio's amazing WCW debut where he really caught the eye of fans looking for something different. That Benoit/Sullivan match is one of the best brawls ever. Even the third best match on the show was great as Sting beat Steven Regal (William Regal in WWE) in a very competitive match. Sting was definitely slowing down a bit in the mid 1990s. He was at his best in the late 1980s/early 1990s, but he was still fine here. In terms of a big angle, this show had that too with Steve McMichael becoming a member with the Four Horsemen along with Ric Flair and Arn Anderson. He was a terrible wrestler, but as a former NFL player it was a big name that they could add to the great to get them more attention. There was also a very cool moment as Kevin Nash and Scott Hall attacked WCW announcer (at the time) Eric Bischoff with Nash giving Bischoff a Powerbomb off the stage. It was a very memorable spot, which was one month before Hulk Hogan joined them to form the New World Order.
The main event was a stinker as The Giant (Big Show) defended the WCW Title against Lex Luger, but that was a common thing in WCW in the mid to late 1990s. The midcard was generally pretty awesome and the main events were bad a lot of the time. It shouldn't be that way, but that's WCW.
