8 Wrestlers Who Broke All The Rules

6. Chris Jericho - The Veteran Who Craves The Challenge

Chris Jericho has long been one of the smartest people in the wrestling industry, with the Canadian having his finger regularly on the pulse when it comes to changing his character up and making sure that he remains fresh and engaging.

Why Jericho warrants a spot in this article, though, is for how he opted to walk away from WWE in order to return to New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Jericho isn't the first big name who decided to try their hand elsewhere, but Le Champion is a rare breed who went against what had for so long been declared the norm of pro wrestling. By that norm, it's the path of signing with WWE, becoming a main event star, then either seeing your in-ring days out in WWE or maybe heading to IMPACT Wrestling for a lighter schedule.

For Jericho, he made the call to return to NJPW at the age of 47 purely for the chance to mix it up with the likes of Kenny Omega and Tetsuya Naito.

Other top stars may have left WWE to work elsewhere, but nobody of that status (and, frankly, that age) had walked away from WWE to head to NJPW simply for the love of the profession and to match-off against some of the hottest talents in the game.

At 47 years of age, anybody else would've happily re-signed with the safety blanket that is WWE as they looked to wind down their in-ring days. But no, not Chris Jericho.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic. Between his main dayjob, his role as the lead panel host of Wales Comic Con, and his gig as a pre-match host for Wrexham AFC games, Andrew has also carried out a hugely varied amount of interviews, from the likes of Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Adrienne Barbeau, Rob Zombie, Katharine Isabelle, Leigh Whannell, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd, to Kevin Smith, Ron Perlman, Elijah Wood, Giancarlo Esposito, Simon Pegg, Charlie Cox, the Russo Brothers, and Brian Blessed, to Kevin Conroy, Paul Dini, Tara Strong, Will Friedle, Burt Ward, Andrea Romano, Frank Miller, and Rob Liefeld, to Bret Hart, Sting, Mick Foley, Ricky Starks, Jamie Hayer, Britt Baker, Eric Bischoff, and William Regal, to Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones, Phil Parkinson, Brian Flynn, Denis Smith, Gary Bennett, Karl Connolly, and Bryan Robson - and that's just the tip of an ever-expanding iceberg.
