8 Wrestlers Who Could Be Chris Jericho's Teased Secret Mystery Opponent

4. Jerry Lynn

Jerry Lynn is a former Ring Of Honor World champion, and two weeks ago, Chris Jericho dropped him on the belt via Tombstone piledriver in a very effective heat angle.

Excalibur was quick to point out that Lynn had suffered serious neck issues throughout his career. Did he do this to sell the gravity of the beat-down, or to thwart any potential conversations about a one-off return? Or both?

Lynn did work a scheduled retirement match on a show built around it in 2013; he wasn't told that he couldn't work again under any circumstances.

He certainly warrants the silhouette graphic gimmick; a beloved cult legend, he'd be sure to generate a big, incredulous, feel-good pop. He was an architect of the modern pro wrestling style. Wowing fans in an influential if little-seen series with Sean 'Lightning Kid' Waltman, he was both proto-WCW cruiserweight and, through his awesome series with Rob Van Dam, the man who created the template for the blisteringly intricate back-and-forth style that is still in vogue all these years later. This was not always the case; he was actually resented by ROH fans throughout his brief reign, which was perceived to be a contrived tie-in to The Wrestler.

A return match - not that it's likely, since Lynn is 59 and hasn't worked a match in nine years - would be such a well-earned redemptive moment.
